Waldorf Salad

Named for the super-deluxe Waldorf Astoria hotel, this salad was the brainstorm of the maître d’hôtel, Oscar Tschirky. The orginal version, dated to the 1890s used only apples, celery, and mayonnaise. Nuts and grapes were added in the 1920s.
