MidCoast Fishermen’s Association

In a recent article in the Portland Press Herald, the state of Maine's fishing industry is continuing to battle the current for positive change. We spotted this information via the Portland Food Map blog.

Currently alloted barely enough time to make a living, the rules fishermen must follow will have to change in order to sustain supply and the local industry. New management in place for 2010 will hopefully give relief to what are crippling cuts.

Glen Libby, chairman of the Midcoast Fishermen's Association and president of the Midcoast Fishermen's Cooperative is encouraged by a different system at work in the pipeline. A balance must be struck with scientists, fishery, and government representatives to allow flexibility for fishermen while maintaining strong accountability through catch limits and careful scientific monitoring.

2008 saw a year where many Maine fishermen had to sell out of the industry. Midcoast Fishermen's Association is admirably trying to save Maine's fishing heritage and sustain resources for future generations. No easy task.
