It used to be that when friends or neighbors wanted to meet up with each other, they’d usually say, “See you at the coffee shop.” And there they’d sit, nursing a latte and catching up on each other’s news.
While visiting California last month, I was eager to connect with longtime friends I hadn’t seen for many months, and suggested getting together at the corner coffee emporium. I was surprised – and delighted – when my idea was amended to, “Let’s meet at the farmers’ market.”
It made perfect sense. The farmers’ market in any town is a natural
gathering place, is great for people watching, and usually has musical
entertainment and vendors selling food and drinks. And you and your
friend can browse the stalls together admiring the produce, cheese,
fruits, crafts, and local meats and fish. Most farmers’ markets provide
picnic tables or benches where you can sit down to discuss your
purchases, swap recipes, gossip, and extend your visit for as long as
you wish.

A selection of locally grown vegetables at the Ojai, CA Farmers’ Market
Here in Maine, there is still plenty of time left to enjoy the many farmers’ markets
before the cold weather hits. The displays of fruits and vegetables are
breathtakingly beautiful. The handcrafted cheeses are seductive. The
artisan breads are fragrant and fresh. There are just-picked flowers in
a riot of colors. And organic eggs, homemade jams and pies.
Not to mention that all your friends and neighbors will be there, too.
Farmers’ markets are among the all-time best “feel good” places anywhere.
