Farmers’ Market in Central Maine

I have just returned from the Dexter Community Farmer’s market which comes together every Friday thanks to the generosity of a local grocery store that makes their parking lot available to the vendors. Among the vendors is my friend Sandy who raises goats and makes the most delicious and delicate goat cheese I have ever tasted. The garlic flavored cheese had already been snatched up so I picked up the herbed flavor. The message: Get there early!

The truck next to Sandy had beautiful, freshly picked sugar snap
peas which I picked up to serve topped with the goat cheese – a great
combination.

In another truck a Mennonite man and his son displayed their
vegetables, including rainbow Swiss chard which was worthy of a
photograph. I picked up two bunches to serve with dinner (sautéed in
olive oil flavored with shallot).

A little further down, a lovely young Mennonite woman was selling
her baked goods. Again, I paid for arriving late as the early shoppers
had bought all of her spray – free tomatoes. So I bought dessert from
her, whoopee pies, both oatmeal and chocolate. I felt like a kid
again!

I moved on to the fish truck which arrives from the coast every
Friday and offers a bountiful array of freshly caught Maine fish. Dinner is
shaping up – sugar snap peas with goat cheese, haddock dusted in
parmesan bread crumbs and sautéed in olive oil, and Swiss chard.  And
the best for last…homemade whoopie pies…all local, all fresh, all
delicious.

Next week, I shall get there earlier…
